Learn when your licence remains valid and your obligations. Update or withdraw your approved liquidator registration through Bizfile.
Note: ACRA no longer accepts new applications for approved liquidators or public accountants (PAs) wanting to become judicial managers (JMs).
To act as a liquidator, JM or trustee in bankruptcy (TIB) for new cases from 30 July 2020, you need to register as an Insolvency Practitioner with the Ministry of Law instead.
When your approved liquidator licence remains valid
If you were already an approved liquidator before 30 July 2020, your licence remains valid. You do not need to renew it when it expires.
The Minister declared all approved liquidators as a specific class of persons under section 9(1) of the Companies Act on 30 July 2020. This means that if you were already an approved liquidator before 30 July 2020, your licence remains valid until it is:
Cancelled voluntarily;
Or revoked by ACRA on grounds such as bankruptcy.
You do not need to renew your liquidator licence.
Cases that started before 30 June 2020
You can act as a liquidator for:
Winding up cases that started under the Companies Act or Limited Liability Partnerships Act before the IRDA came into effect and are still ongoing
Replacement liquidator roles when the appointed liquidator resigns or is no longer an approved liquidator
Variable capital company (VCC) cases
You can act as a liquidator for winding up cases for Variable Capital Companies and their sub-funds.
This applies during the interim period until the VCC Act updates to allow Insolvency Practitioners to undertake this work.
